Yoga Meditation

Yoga is a discipline of the body and mind that finds its origins in India. This centuries-old alternative therapy focuses on physical exercise techniques called ‘asanas’ to invigorate the body. Similarly, to rejuvenate the mind, breathing techniques called ‘pranayama’ and yoga meditation are practiced. Yoga and Meditation in fact have a very strong connection and inter-dependence.

There are two main types of meditation, active and passive. Passive meditation involves making a conscious effort in performing meditative activities. Therefore, you need to take time to concentrate and focus your energies on meditating. This eventually leads to an active meditative state in everyday life, while performing day-to-day activities. You can join a yoga class for meditation or simply do this in the quiet of your home.

Healing Meditation

There are several healing meditation poses that you can try. As a general rule, a sitting posture is better for meditation than lying down. One is the ‘Padmasana’ or the full lotus posture, where you need sit cross-legged with your back upright. Another common seated meditative pose is the ‘Ardha Padmasana’ or the half lotus pose, where only one leg is crossed over the other. Make sure you are comfortable and in a quiet place. Also, wear loose fitting clothing than does not constrict your body in any way. Close your eyes and try to keep your mind clear of any thoughts. This will help you focus on meditative activity alone. To keep your mind alert during meditation, take slow deep breaths. You could also try chanting ‘Om’ while meditating. The vibrations from this noise are said to be extremely beneficial to the body as they stimulate various body parts to function properly.

Meditation is an exceptional stress-buster and is also useful against anxiety and depression as it regulates the endocrine system, thus controlling the release of hormones that affects moods and behavior. As meditation has a soothing effect on your body, your blood pressure and heart rate are normal, reducing the risk of any sort of cardiovascular disease. It also improves the functioning of the digestive and excretory system. It has also been found that immune system responses have improved with yoga & meditation.

Daily meditation is said to strengthen your connection with your spiritual centre, such that it has a positive impact on your mind and emotions. Meditation is said to help you have clearer thoughts as compared to scattered thoughts. It helps elevate your consciousness above the mundane restoring a sense of calm to your mind. As the body state depends on the state of your mind, it helps improve the health of your body as well. The benefits of meditation will become evident in your life as you continue your practice.
