Common Cold Symptoms
Common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory system and is a seasonal occurrence. It generally shows symptoms like a rise in body temperature, coughs, headaches, body aches, watery eyes, a runny nose, sore throat, loss of appetite, and congestion of the respiratory tract. There are numerous viruses that can cause a common cold and the symptoms may also vary from person to person. Although a common cold is mostly harmless and the body recovers on its own, it is quite discomforting and annoying while the body suffers from it. If, however, you do not recover even after a week of suffering from a cold, it is advisable to visit a doctor.
Home Remedies For Common Cold
There are many home remedies that are practiced to relieve the body, from common cold. The first thing to do is to drink sufficient amounts of water when you have cold. Tea, juice, and soups can also be had at regular intervals to keep your body from dehydrating. However, caffeinated drinks and alcoholic beverages are to be strictly avoided. Lemon is also a good remedy for a common cold and congestion. Drink some lemon juice; mix it in a glass of warm water, and add a few drops of honey. This drink can be quite effective against common cold-related symptoms. Garlic is another good remedy for fighting against a common cold. You can make a soup of garlic by boiling a few pieces of chopped garlic and drink it. Similarly, you can make a soup with ginger, or you can also make ginger tea and drink it at regular intervals. It will soothe the throat and also lessen the congestion arising from a cold. Turmeric is another remedy that is widely used to fight a common cold. Take a spoonful of turmeric powder and mix it in a glass of warm milk. This drink will help discharge the mucus in the respiratory tract and provide much relief. Fruits containing vitamin C, like lemon and oranges, are also good for relieving a common cold. If you cannot get enough vitamin C from your diet, you can take special vitamin C supplements, which are usually found at drug stores in the form of tablets. Besides vitamin C, you should also take foods containing zinc, or zinc supplements.
Apart from following these remedies, you should give your body adequate rest. Sleep well, eat proper and nutritious food, and as far as possible, remain indoors. There are no restrictions in your diet as such, but do avoid red meats, starchy foods, and processed foods.
