Diabetes or diabetes mellitus as it is medically called is a set of related diseases in which the body is unable to regulate the amount of sugar or glucose present in the blood. The glucose content in the body plays an important role in providing an individual with energy to walk, perform daily activities, run, walk briskly or even take an aerobic class. Glucose is created by the liver and the glucose level is regulated by several hormones such as insulin. This insulin helps the glucose to move from the blood and into the liver, fat cells and muscles, where it is to be used as fuel. Diabetes is split into two main categories. Type I Diabetes is where an individuals body does not create enough insulin; or Type II Diabetes - where the body is unable to use the insulin properly. In both cases, the glucose in the blood is unable to move into cells, causing it to remain in the blood which results in harm being caused not only to the blood, but to the organs and tissues exposed to these high levels of glucose as well. The more common of the two conditions, Type II diabetes accounts for almost 90% of the population that suffer from the condition. The condition is usually detected after the age of 45 and can be significantly controlled by diet, weight loss, oral medications and exercise.

It is important to understand the causes of diabetes as there seem to be a number of myths surrounding the condition. While eating sweets or wrong types of foods are not a direct cause, they can lead to obesity, which is associated with the onset of the condition. Heredity is one of the foremost causes of the condition.

Some well known and trusted home remedies for the condition include taking some honey and combining it with equal amounts of turmeric powder and dried gooseberry powder. Have this mixture on a regular basis for best results. If you have high levels of sugar, you should try chewing on about 3 or 4 leaves of Syzygium cumini in the morning as well as in the evening. Another successful remedy is to mix about 3 tablespoons of cinnamon powder to a liter of water and heat it for about 20 minutes. Strain the water and drink it while still warm. Soaking a few almonds over the course of the night and having them on an empty stomach first thing in the morning is also known to have a considerable effect on the condition.
