Technically known as veisalgia, hangover is the feeling of nausea, headache, dizziness and fatigue that sets in after excessive consumption of alcohol. Typically, it affects the person in the morning after a night of excessive drinking. Often, the person’s lips, mouth, tongue and throat feel very dry and there is a strong urge to keep drinking water to keep them wet. The cause behind all these symptoms is that alcohol dehydrates the system and hampers normal body functioning.

Home Remedies For Hangover

There are few preventive measures that are useful in preventing a hangover in the first place. As a rule, never drink on an empty stomach. Always munch on something while you are drinking, as this helps control the rate at which the alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream and thereby reduces the intensity of the after-effects of drinking. It is also recommended that you drink plenty of water before going to bed to prevent a hangover the next morning. You should also drink at least a couple of glasses of water after you wake up in the morning to counter the effects of dehydration caused by alcohol. A very popular and time-tested home remedy for hangovers is to add the juice of a fresh lemon into a glass of water and drink it. This restores some of the water lost because of dehydration and often relieves the headache and the feeling of nausea. Drinking fresh fruit juices is another effective remedy for hangover, as they contain a natural sugar called fructose that helps break down the alcohol in the body faster, as well as rehydrate the body naturally. You could also consume a tablespoon of honey for similar effects, as honey is the rich source of natural sugar. For another remedy, you should boil two banana peels in water for some time and let the solution cool down before drinking it. You could also crush a few thyme leaves and steep them in hot water for five minutes; then strain out the clear liquid and drink this tea for instant relief. Alternatively, you could also eat a banana to treat a hangover. To get rid of the headache, you should drink a small cup of coffee, as this helps reduce the swelling of the blood vessels, which causes heaviness and pain in the head.
