Hay Fever Natural Remedies And Seasonal Allergy Symptoms

Hay Fever Symptoms And Remedies

Hay fever is essentially a type of allergic rhinitis, which in turn is basically a condition in which a runny nose and all the associated symptoms develop as a result of an allergic reaction. In the case of hay fever, the allergen in question is pollen, usually of seasonal plants. Hay fever usually occurs during haying season, typically the time between spring and summer, and hence the name. This is usually when the pollen of certain wind pollinated plants is present in the air in rather large quantities. However, hay fever is not exclusive to haying season – it can occur at pretty much any time of the year.

Generally, the best way to treat allergies is to avoid the allergen and thus avoid having the reaction at all. However, with an allergy such as hay fever, this is not always possible. Whenever it is possible, it is advisable to stay indoors during haying season. Windows and doors should be kept closed as far as possible, and air conditioning should be used to filter and circulate air. Special pollen filters are also available, and these can be fitted to air conditioners in order to keep pollen out more effectively. If you must go outdoors, it is advisable to travel by car and keep the windows closed. Here too, pollen filters can be fitted to the air conditioning. You should avoid open air as much as possible during hay season.

If it is not possible to take such measures, then the only alternative is to use remedies to lessen the severity of the allergic reaction. Steam inhalation is a safe and effective way to ease nasal congestion and also clear the airways of allergens. A home made saline solution should also be used as a nasal spray. Simply mix a bit of salt in water, and use this solution. Some people recommend regular consumption of honey that has been locally produced and has not been filtered. The idea is to get the body used to pollen in the local area, as this pollen will be present in unfiltered honey too. While the efficacy of this treatment is unproven, it is certainly worth trying. You can also try some herbal remedies such as feverfew and eyebright. However, these herbs can have unpleasant and even dangerous side effects, and it is therefore better to consult a doctor before taking them. In some cases, medical treatment may also be necessary, such as antihistamines or allergy shots.
