Laya Yoga - A Yogic Meditation
What is Laya Yoga?
Laya Yoga is the practice of yogic meditation, which uses specific ways to focus on the ‘chakras’ (energy channels in the body) and thus increase the Kundalini power.
The term ‘laya’ means dissolution. Laya Yoga meditation refers to freeing or melting all the impressions accumulated throughout our lifetime, removing all obstacles from the mind and thus freeing the soul in order to achieve ‘mukti’ or salvation.
Laya Yoga Kundalini uses mantras (chants), mudras (graceful gestures) and asanas (poses) for achieving its end of liberation for the soul.
While all forms of yoga and meditation have to be learned under the guidance of a good teacher, it is even more essential when it comes to learning Laya Yoga meditation.
How Laya Yoga works:
According to Laya Yoga, we have two main energy centers in our head and five such centers in our spine. Your teacher will teach and guide you to find the exact location of these centers. These energy centers are like doorways which will lead you to the regions of higher consciousness.
These five centers are found in the head and main parts of the spine:
The first step of Laya Yoga meditation requires you to sit in Padmasana (Lotus Yoga Pose) or Siddhasana (Yoga Meditation Pose), and concentrate inwards. In the beginning you will be distracted by loud sounds, but gradually they will fade away, and you will be able to distinguish inner sounds and lights.
Laya Yoga helps us to open our seven centers and attain higher levels of purity and consciousness. But at the same time, you need the guidance of a wise teacher, or you may over-stimulate yourself, causing confusion and pain.

These five centers are found in the head and main parts of the spine:
- The first is the head center. This is located on your forehead, half an inch above the exact point where the eyebrows meet. It is also called the ‘third eye’ and is associated with inner, higher and spiritual knowledge.
- The second center is also in the head – this time on the crown of the head. It is the main source where spiritual energy, knowledge and light enters the body
- The throat center is located at the base of the neck, inside the spine. It is directly behind the collar button.
- The heart centre is exactly behind your heart and inside your spine. This is an important center, since it enables and empowers you in many ways. It expands your awareness, and discovers the power of love. Laya Yoga meditation helps you to open this center and overcome selfishness. By expanding your heart, it helps you overcome worries and fears, by giving you tremendous insight and strength.
- Another center is located behind your navel in your spinal column.
- Yet another centre is located in the region of the sacrum and another in your tailbone.
