Natural Remedies For Acid Reflux – GERD Conditions And Causes

Acid Reflux Causes And Natural Remedies

Acid reflux, also known as GERD or Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease, is a relatively common condition. Simply stated, the condition occurs when the liquid content of the stomach moves upwards, or in reverse, and travels back into the esophagus tube, which is ideally supposed to allow the food to travel from the mouth to the stomach and not the other way around. Partially digested food contains a high acid content as well as enzymes that break down the food. The stomach is protected against this combination as there is a protective layer that lines the stomach. However, if the partially digested food particles, with their acidic and enzyme content, travel up into the esophagus, the esophagus could be damaged as it does not have the protective layer that is present in the stomach. Once affected by the condition, chances are that you will suffer from it throughout the course of your life. If any injury occurs to the lining of the esophagus, chances are that this may develop into a chronic condition as well. Additionally, if a person takes some medication to heal the injuries, the damage is known to re-occur when the patient stops the regular intake of the medication. About 80% of the inpidual’s that suffer from GERD are also known to suffer from hiatis hernia, where the stomach partially rises into the chest cavity through an opening in the diaphragm that allows the esophagus to connect to the stomach.

The condition is known to be caused by a number of factors such as stress, elevated hormone levels, an excessive intake of carbonated beverages or alcohol, smoking and eating large meals. Diseases that tend to weaken the esophageal muscle are also known to aggravate the condition extensively.

Over the years, due to the widespread effect of the condition, a number of home remedies have popped up that have not only proved to be financially viable, but over the years, tremendously effective as well. Apple cider vinegar is extremely helpful when dealing with acid reflux. While some people may strenuously question the logic behind treating an acidic problem with even more acid, apple cider vinegar is an exception to the rule. All you need to do is add 1 teaspoon of the vinegar to about ½ glass of water and consume the solution along with your meal. You could also try slowly chewing on half a teaspoon of fennel seeds after your meals.
