Symptoms Of The Stomach Flu

A stomach virus is also commonly known as stomach flu or viral gastroenteritis. It is primarily an inflammation of the stomach, and may include the small and the large intestine.

It is mainly caused due to an infection in the gastrointestinal tract which further triggers the spread of the stomach virus, thus leading to an irritation or inflammation in the stomach or intestines. Having an allergic reaction to certain kinds of food can cause gastroenteritis, but in the case of a viral infection, eating spoiled food and drinking contaminated water are the main causes of stomach flu.

This kind of a condition is characterized by several symptoms, namely:
  • Nausea, sometimes accompanied by vomiting
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Painful cramps in the abdomen and/or a swollen abdomen
  • Tiredness or fatigue and muscle aches

The most important treatment for a stomach virus is to prevent severe loss of fluids, otherwise known as dehydration. Dehydration could be a life threatening condition, and hence it is essential to keep drinking lots of water. Dehydration symptoms include increased thirst, light-headedness, a decreased urine output, and dry or sticky membranes in the mouth.

Ensure that your diet consists of bland food accompanied by plenty of water, and ensure that your body gets a substantial amount of rest. The most prudent thing to do is to have a lot of clear liquids and eat foods that are easily digestible. Try to avoid citrus and greasy foods. Additionally, stay away from dairy products and any form of carbonated drinks, alcohol, and coffee. Preferably maintain a diet that comprises of simple carbohydrates. This will help your body to get back the energy required. Here are a few suggestions of foods that will not irritate the lining of your stomach or cause a gastrointestinal reaction:
  • Bananas
  • Dry toast
  • Boiled and mashed fruit
  • Boiled and mashed vegetables

Medications of any sort, particularly antibiotics (as they will have no effect on the virus) should be avoided unless they have been specifically recommended by a physician. It is always advisable to consult a doctor right at the onset of a stomach virus. This is because serious cases may become difficult to handle without oral rehydration and supplements. Furthermore, the doctor would also recommend certain food types and supplements for those whose symptoms do not abate in 7-10 days.
