Tightening Loose Skin - How To Tighten Your Saggy Skin After Weight Loss

How To Tighten Loose Skin

Sudden and rapid weight loss often causes the skin to become loose and saggy. This is because of the fact that the human skin is very elastic and expands easily over the muscles and fat deposits that get accumulated in the body during weight gain. But when a person loses significant amounts of fatty cells over a very short period of time, the skin fails to contract and tends to hang loosely. It is best, therefore, to lose weight gradually and not very suddenly. Severe diet regimes and surgical methods of removal of fat from the body do help get you back “in shape” very quickly, but they almost invariable lead to saggy skin, which takes a long time and a good deal of effort to return to its normal condition. Moreover, even after you loose a lot of weight very rapidly, some fat still remains under the skin, which is not sufficient to hold it tightly stretched, but which makes the sagging skin flabbier. Loss in the total muscle mass beneath the skin also causes it to hang loose.

One of the most effective ways of tightening loose skin is to exercise on a daily basis. You should focus particularly on those pasts of the body where the skin tends to sag the most, namely, abdomen, hips, thighs and upper arms. Consult a trainer and do a few stretching exercises for an hour every day to tone up the muscles and the skin of these areas. You should also prioritize building up your muscles as this is a healthy way of tightening the skin and giving your body a firm look. Weight-training and –lifting exercises prove to be highly beneficial in this regard. Sit-ups, push-ups, lunges and squats are the most popular exercises for toning up muscles. You should, however, not overdo it and always consult your trainer before going in for any of these exercises in order to prevent over-exertion and injury. A proper diet is also essential to making your muscles firmer and your skin tauter. Certain food products like soybean, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries contain antioxidants, biotin and vitamins, as well as induce the production of collagen, all of which make the skin more elastic and firm. It is also useful to wear tight-fitting garments, as over a period of time they compress loose skin and bring it back to its normal shape to a great extent. In fact, corsets and waist-bands are known to significantly tighten loose, saggy skin.
