Goiter is nothing but a thyroid gland that has grown abnormally large. This gland is located at the base of our necks. When a person is affected with goiter, this gland tends to get enlarged. Although there may be no pain associated with this condition it can often pose a difficulty in breathing and swallowing. Goiter does not necessarily indicate that one’s thyroid glad has malfunctioned. In other words, a goiter can form in a gland that produces too little, too much or even the right amount of hormones. The presence of a goiter means there is some condition present in the body, which results in the abnormal growth of the thyroid. One of the most common causes of goiter is a deficiency of iodine. However it is not limited to this alone, there could be several other causes as well. Some of the symptoms associated with goiter are, a swelling on the base of the neck, a difficulty in breathing or swallowing, depression and irritability, and emotional problems, among others.
There are a few remedies that can help fight this condition. Take a few dandelion leaves and smear clarified butter on them. Warm the leaves a little and then apply them on to the swelling. Doing this for 5-6 days is known to reduce any discomfort. Flax seeds are also very useful. Take a few seeds and grind them in water. Boil the mixture, and once it has cooled, apply it on the affected area. Next take the leaves of the plant and use them to bandage the area. This should be done 2-3 times in a week. Barley water is also very beneficial in curing goiter. Having a glass daily will go a long way. Foods such as whole rice, lettuce, sea food, onions, citrus fruits, and oats are known to reduce the swelling. Try and incorporate them in your daily diet. Watercress is also helpful when it comes to fighting goiter. Take a few watercress leaves and mash them to make a thick paste. Apply the paste on the swelling and let it stay for about 10-15 minutes after which rinse it off. You could also apply the paste made from equal quantities of olive oil and sorrel leaves.
