Eczema, technically known as atopic dermatitis, is a condition in which small, red itchy patches and bumps appear on the skin. If the rashes are scratched with bare fingers, they may become bruised and ooze a fluid that then causes the infection to spread to other parts of the skin. The skin eruptions mostly appear on the arms, neck, feet and joints. Eczema can be hereditary in nature, and is also often triggered by contact with allergens present in the immediate environment. Thus, ailments like hay fever may be responsible for this condition. It may also result from allergic reactions to certain harsh chemicals present in soaps and detergents. Exposure to heat and dust, excessive perspiration, a weak immune system and poor digestion are among the other factors that may cause eczema. Eczema is also contagious and hence can be easily transmitted from one person to another.

There are quite a few simple home remedies that you may follow to solve this problem. One of the most effective natural means of treating eczema is to mix a teaspoon each of sandalwood powder and camphor and add a little water to it and gently apply this paste on the affected area. This brings great relief from the feeling of itchiness. Follow this remedy daily for a week to get rid of the skin eruptions completely. Another useful remedy is to soak a few nutmegs in a cup of water overnight and grind them to paste the next morning and massage the affected areas with this paste thrice a day. A very useful and effective remedy is to smear the skin with the juice of muskmelon regularly till the rashes disappear completely. You may also peel a couple of raw mangoes and boil the pulp in a pan of water for 10 minutes, then let the extract cool down to room temperature and apply it over the affected portions of the skin. In order to resist the urge to scratch the skin, you should apply a cold compress using chilled water or milk on the affected areas at frequent intervals throughout the day. Besides these, follow a few precautionary measures too. Avoid foods that might trigger an allergic reaction, such as citrus fruits, nuts and berries, pickles and sauces containing preservatives, eggs and dairy products. As far as possible, stay indoors in order to avoid contact with smoke, dust and pollutants, which may intensify the symptoms.
