Natural Remedies To Get Rid of Lice

Lice are parasitic organisms that mostly infest and infect the scalp. Technically known as pediculosis, the infection of the scalp by these parasites commonly affects children. Lice can spread very easily through physical contact and thus typically affects lots of children in a particular season. The most common symptoms of lice are a constant urge to scratch the scalp. This may also cause weakening of the roots of the hair and consequently localized hair loss. In a few cases, head lice may also cause fevers.

The best way of preventing lice is to ensure that you maintain proper personal hygiene. You should regularly shampoo and condition your hair in order to minimize the risk of infection. Also, make sure that you do not share combs, towels and other such articles of personal use with others, as lice can spread very easily through these means. There are several natural solutions for treating lice. One of the most effective remedies for lice is to extract the juice of an onion by grating and crushing it finely, and massage the roots of your hair gently with this juice. Leave it on for at least three hours before rinsing your hair thoroughly with water. The high sulfur content of onion juice kills lice on the scalp. You should follow this remedy for three or four days in a row in order to completely remove the nits (eggs) they lay on the scalp.

Another excellent remedy for head lice is to grind a raw custard apple along with the seeds to pulp by adding a little water to it and using a mixer grinder. Apply this paste all over the scalp before going to bed and use put on a shower cap in order to allow the pulp to act on your scalp all night. The next morning wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo. This will get rid of lice in a few days. For another remedy, rub the scalp vigorously with a few small slices of an apple for 20 minutes every day. You may also crush a few cloves of garlic and add two teaspoons of fresh lemon juice to this, and apply this mixture at the roots of your hair at bedtime. Shampoo your hair the next morning. The combination of the pungent juice of garlic and the acidic juice of lemon effectively destroys lice. A teaspoon of camphor added to fresh coconut oil may also be applied similarly for eliminating lice.
