Hand Dermatitis: Ways To Avoid Hand Eczema And Allergies

How To Avoid Hand Dermatitis

Hand dermatitis or hand eczema is a common condition that arises as a result of a variety of factors. It is often genetically inherited and then worsens as a reaction to pollutants, irritants and high levels of stress. People who work in catering, healthcare or cleaning, hairdressing or mechanical work are more prone to hand eczema, as a consequence of the substances their hands are exposed to everyday. Mostly, hand dermatitis is irritant dermatitis, which is an allergic reaction to substances like metal, rubber, detergent or even food. Hand eczema may be more or less severe depending on the nature of the allergy and it generally affects the palms, hands or even the wrists. The condition is very painful, often causing the skin to become scaly and inflamed. The dermatitis may spread to other parts of the body as well, and it is therefore essential to treat the condition immediately.

Certain general precautions should be kept in mind if you suffer from hand dermatitis. Always remember to wear gloves while working to avoid contact with harmful substances. Cotton gloves are ideal, as they do not trap sweat and bacteria and can be washed frequently. However, if you need to use gloves that are waterproof, you can ensure that they are lined with cotton on the inside so that it does not aggravate your hand eczema. Wearing gloves also ensures that you don’t have to wash your hands too often during the day, as excessive washing of the hands may also cause them to become dry and itchy. Use only lukewarm water to wash your hand, as water that is too hot may trigger of an allergic reaction. Use only mild soaps and detergents, as very strong smelling soaps may contain ingredients that are detrimental to your hand dermatitis.

Treatment For Hand Eczema

A cold compress for your hand may help relieve the pain, swelling and itching temporarily. Soak a cotton cloth in cold milk or water and place it on your hands for at least fifteen minutes. Try this not more than three times a day because repeated wetting of the area may cause it to become drier. Applying calamine lotion on the eczema may help cure the allergic reaction. Ensure that you do not scratch or rub the affected area as this will only worsen the condition. Soak your hands in an oatmeal bath at least once a day to help relieve itching and inflammation.
