How Can I Stop My Hiccup Quickly?
A hiccup is caused when the diaphragm, which is a sheet of muscle in the chest cavity, gets contacted very suddenly and several times in a row. This causes air to rush into the lungs and forces the epiglottis to close shut, producing a “hic” sound. Usually, hiccups get cured naturally in a few minutes but sometimes they may persist longer. The main causes behind the irritation of the diaphragm are excessive consumption of alcohol, eating very fast or too much at a time, consumption of hot, spicy food, indigestion, laryngitis, inflammation of the eardrum, bloating in the stomach and smoking. Sudden excitement may also sometimes trigger a bout of hiccups.
Home Remedies To Get Rid of Hiccups
There are a few simple remedies for getting rid of hiccups. The easiest way is to breathe in deeply and then try and hold your breath as long as possible. For another remedy, slowly suck a spoonful of powdered sugar and then drink a glass of cold water. Alternatively, you may also hold your nostrils shut with your fingers and plug some cotton wool into your ears and then sip cold water from a glass through a straw. This should relieve you of the hiccups in a few minutes. Consuming a teaspoon of peanut butter is also known to bring quick relief from hiccups. Another useful trick to stop hiccups is to contract the muscles of your stomach just as you do when you burp. This should be done just at the moment you feel you are going to hiccup. A couple of attempts should make the hiccups stop. If the problem still persists, gulp down a glass of soda water very quickly. You may also gargle with a glass of water after every meal if the problem is regular and recurrent in nature. An effective remedy for stopping hiccups is to add a teaspoon of salt to a bowl of yogurt and eat it slowly. You may also boil a teaspoon of cardamom powder in two cups of water for a few minutes, then strain the solution through a fine sieve and drink it while it is still warm. This is an excellent natural means of putting a stop to hiccups. You may also mix together half a teaspoon each of mustard seeds and clarified butter, and consume this mixture to treat hiccups. It is also believed that laughing loudly or perting your mind to something can get rid of hiccups naturally.
