Itchy Rashes Around Mouth: Symptoms And Causes Of Infection

Itchy Rash Symptoms And Causes

Itchy rashes around the mouth can be caused due to a variety of factors and are normally accompanied by a host of other symptoms. Angular cheilitis is a possible diagnosis and infected people usually have an inflamed lesion around the mouth. Vitamin B complex is the most common remedy for this condition and it is likely to clear up in a few days. Avoid all cosmetic products especially lipstick and foundation on the lips and skin for a few days. Consume multivitamin supplements and drink plenty of water. It would be a good idea to use a humidifier at home as this helps moisturize the air. Apply petroleum jelly, Aloe Vera gel, shea butter or even clarified butter to your lips. Coconut oil will also work as a good moisturiser and its antifungal, antibacterial properties are likely to clear up the infection if applied topically.

The rash and itching could be the sign of an allergic reaction to toothpaste. Tartar control toothpastes are likely to cause itching and redness around the mouth because of certain compounds it contains, and it is advisable to stay off it completely or use it minimally and only once a day. Apply a lotion made of crushed Vitamin C tablets and water to the rash for a few days and see if it helps with the itching. The rash should disappear in a week or so. Although there are several lotions that claim to contain Vitamin C, they are likely to be in very minimal quantities and hence the crushed tablet remedy is the best.

Perioral dermatitis is another possible condition and the symptoms include red skin around the lips, tiny red or pink bumps that are pus filled, the skin around the area may peel off and it may be accompanied by an itching or burning sensation. The causes for this condition include the use of strong steroid based creams, an allergy to makeup, the components of moisturizers, sunscreens, or due to exposure to strong winds and the harmful UV rays of the sun. Check if your skin care products include paraffin, sodium lauryl sulphate, petrolatum, isopropyl myristate or cinnamon flavouring as these are likely culprits. Consult a dermatologist as soon as possible, as you may require antibiotics lest the infection last for months even after stopping the usage of the likely cause. Steroid creams might be prescribed, but their application must be controlled as it might worsen the rash.
