Callus Removal From Feet: What Causes Calluses And Corns On Feet
Causes Of Calluses
Calluses refer to a thickening of the topmost layer of the skin and are usually found on the underside of the toe, the heel or the ball of the foot. Calluses are caused by an accumulation of dead cells over a period of time which thicken or harden. Calluses are symptomised by a feeling of increased discomfort while wearing stilettos or thin soled shoes, pain while walking which immediately ends when the feet have been rested, and the more visible hard growth on the ball of the foot. Calluses are usually caused by the constant use of high heeled shoes, shoes that do not fit comfortably and that cramp the feet, an abnormal gait, metatarsal bones that are misaligned, highly arched feet, obesity, a short Achilles tendon or even flat feet.
How To Remove Calluses
Never try to cut or trim the callus using a razor or knife, as this is dangerous and you may cut yourself, apart from only worsening the situation. A long soak should help your feet especially if you mix some Epsom salts, essential oil or tea tree oil into a warm basin of water. After your feet have soaked sufficiently, use a pumice stone to file away the calluses gently. This will ensure that the dead skin is filed away while stimulating fresh growth from underneath the present layer of skin. If the calluses are particularly hard and have grown over a long period of time, do not try to take them off all at once. Wipe your feet dry with a soft towel and moisturize thoroughly with your regular moisturizer or petroleum jelly. Wear a clean pair of cotton soaks after moisturizing and keep them on overnight. This is to ensure that your feet undergo deep moisturization even as you sleep. Honey works as an excellent moisturizer and an antioxidant, and will clear up any accompanying foot infections. Crushed shells of walnuts can be used as a good exfoliating scrub but only after making sure that they are finely powdered and that there are no sharp edges left that can cut you. You can mash avocados and a mango together and apply onto the callused feet to soften them. Take care to wear shoes that fit properly. The best time to buy them would be at the end of the day when your feet are at their largest. Repair your shoes regularly and do not wait till they jar with every step you take.
