Freckles are multiple spots that occur randomly on the surface of the skin, usually following recurring exposure to the sun. Individuals with fairer complexions are more prone to freckles and they are most likely to develop on the face, arms and shoulders. The color of the freckles is uniform in each individual. Between individuals, the color may be range from reddish or yellowish to light brown or black. Freckles are distinctively darker that the rest of the skin. They may darken after exposure to sunlight and may lighten during winters when there is less sunlight. Freckles form when the cells that produce the pigment melanin, called melanocytes, begin to produce an excess of the pigment.


Two types of freckles are likely to develop. Simple freckles are those which are tan in color and small and round. Sunburn freckles have a darker appearance and are more irregularly shaped. They are also larger that simple freckles. Sunburn freckles usually develop on the shoulders and upper back which are the areas most prone to sunburn. Freckles are known to occur due to a combination of genetic factors and exposure to sunlight. As a result some individuals are more likely to develop freckles following sun exposure. When the skin is exposed to the ultraviolet radiation of the sun’s rays, there is a thickening of the skin’s outer layer and the melanocytes begin to produce the pigment at a quicker rate



Getting Rid Of Freckles


Individuals with the genetic vulnerability to developing freckles need to take extra measures to protect the skin from sun exposure. Use of sunscreen with a sun protection factor or SPF of 30 is advisable. Also, protect the face by wearing a hat with a wide brim and protect other areas of the body by wearing long sleeved shirts and long trousers. It is also better to stay indoors when the sun is at its strongest. Lemon juice is known to have a lightening effect on the skin and may be used to treat freckles. A mixture of orange juice, lemon juice and parsley juice works well in lightening freckles. You may also apply vitamin E oil to the freckles before sleeping at night. Another remedy for freckles is the application of a mixture of lemon juice and sugar. Buttermilk is believed to lighten pigmentation marks on the skin and can be applied to freckles as well. A paste of sesame seeds and turmeric is also known to work well in treating freckles.
