How To Stop Mucus Production Naturally

A runny nose may be caused by a variety of factors such as common cold, an allergic reaction to substances like pollen, certain kinds of food or even as a result of having consumed unusually spicy food. A runny nose occurs when the production of mucous within the nasal passages increases. This production of mucous is part of the body’s attempt at clearing the cold or flu causing virus and other allergy inducing substances from the body. In order to get rid of the discharge, use tissue paper or a clean cotton cloth to gently blow it out. Take care to not overdo it as it may cause the nose to become tender and sore. Saline sprays that can be easily obtained over the counter are capable of diluting the mucous. One can also prepare a saline solution at home by taking two cups of warm water and mixing in half a teaspoon of salt. A rubber suction bulb can be used to draw out a little a little liquid from the cup and to put a few drops into each nostril. Since dry air is known to thicken the mucous, use a humidifier within the house to help it loosen up.

Natural Treatment

Drink plenty of water and fruit juices, particularly citrus fruit to replace the fluid that is lost from having a runny nose. Garlic and onions will help to eliminate a runny nose although it may take a few days to do so and you can add them to your food while cooking. They work mainly as a preventive measure and if consumed on a daily basis, they are likely to keep your cold at bay. Ginger tea is a popular home remedy and can be made by crushing half an inch of ginger and boiling it one glass of water. Once it has boiled well, strain the mixture and add a teaspoon of honey to sweeten it. Drink a cup a day when still warm. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup of warm milk and consume once or even twice a day to prevent to aid in clearing up the infection. A runny nose will ideally clear itself up in a few days. However if it is accompanied by blood, turns green or if you notice any other change, if it persists for more than two weeks or is accompanied by fever, it would be ideal to consult a physician.
