Bronchitis Natural Treatment – Causes And Symptoms Of Bronchitis

Bronchitis Causes And Symptoms

The term Bronchitis refers to an inflammation in the bronchi, or the bronchial tubes, that carry the air to the lungs. This causes the cells that line the bronchi to get irritated, which makes the cilia stop functioning properly. As a result, the bronchial passages become clogged. Bronchitis can be caused by smoking, pollution, viruses and bacteria. There are two types of bronchitis – acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis. Acute bronchitis is usually the result of a viral infection, which follows a sore throat or a cold. It normally lasts for a few days and does not have any harmful or long-lasting affects. Chronic bronchitis occurs when someone has excessive phlegm and a persistent cough, for a long period of time. It is often neglected till it reaches an advanced state. In order to treat bronchitis, the inflammation has to first be decreased. Albuterol inhalation, through a nebulizer or a hand-held device will help the bronchial tubes to dilate. The use of a short-term steroid therapy could minimize the irritation in the bronchial tubes. Some steroids can be inhaled topically and are believed to have fewer side-effects. Though antibiotics are not always necessary in treating bronchitis, they may be prescribed in some cases, where a bacterial infection is present, along with the virus that usually causes acute bronchitis. Proper hydration is very important factor in the treatment of bronchitis, as fluids can dilute the bronchial secretions, making them easy to expel. Liquids like warm water, tea and soup can also help in soothing the discomfort, caused by a cough or a sore throat. In addition to proper hydration, treatments that contain guaifenesin may also help in clearing these secretions.
