Dandruff Home Treatment | Remedies For Flaky Scalp

One of the most common hair problems that people face is dandruff. Everyday, dead skin cells are lost from our scalp. When this condition persists, the cells tend to clump together and form white or grey flakes that are known as dandruff.

Dandruff can form when the scalp is too dry or too oily. The excess production of sebum, the natural oil secreted from glands in the skin, fuels the growth of a fungus that naturally lives on the scalp. This often results in oily dandruff. Dry dandruff, on the other hand, is usually caused by some form of nutritional deficiency, or as a result of chemical treatments done to your hair, or medical conditions such as eczema or dermatitis.

Using an anti-dandruff shampoos is one of the most convenient methods of getting rid of dandruff. You should look for shampoos that contain zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole, as they are especially useful in combating dandruff caused by fungus. Most anti-dandruff shampoos contain anti-bacterial and anti-microbial agents to prevent further recurrence of dandruff. Make sure you condition your hair after shampooing as excessive dryness can aggravate the problem. Finding the ideal shampoo usually requires a bit of trial and error. For more stubborn forms of dandruff, try a shampoo containing selenium sulfide, which has an anti-yeast effect.

Natural Remedies For Dandruff Cure

There are several home remedies for getting rid of dandruff as well.

  • One of the best homemade remedies is the use of fenugreek seeds. Fenugreek seeds should be soaked overnight, then boiled and ground with water. This paste should be applied to your scalp and hair at least once a week. Fenugreek seeds contain a natural emollient that smoothes and softens your scalp and helps alleviate the dryness and flakiness associated with dandruff.

  • You can also boil rosemary, sage, thyme, and other such herbs in water and use this water to rinse your hair. Massage this liquid into your hair. These herbs not only help remove the flakes from your hair but also combat dryness, leaving your hair fresh and clean.

  • A dry, flaky scalp often leads to itchiness and rash. For symptomatic relief for this condition, apply aloe vera to your scalp and hair. Aloe vera is a natural coolant which helps reduce the itchy sensation.

  • Consuming too much of animal fat or unsaturated vegetable oil can exacerbate dandruff. Therefore, make sure that you avoid oily foodstuffs and consume more of fresh vegetables and fruits. A diet which is rich in vitamins is also advisable, as vitamins provide overall nourishment for your hair.
