Side Effects Of Chemical Skin Peels To Remove Acne Scars

Effects of Chemical Skin Peels  On Skin

A chemical peel is a procedure that can be used to improve the texture of the skin on the face. In often involves the use of a chemical solution that causes the dead skin on a person’s face to slough off then peel off eventually. Therefore, the upper layer of the skin is removed, to reveal fresh, new skin. The skin that is regenerated is generally less wrinkled and smoother than the old skin. Though a few types of chemical peels can be bought and used without the help of a medical expert, it is strongly recommended that you consult a dermatologist, a maxillofacial surgeon or a cosmetic surgeon before performing any type of chemical peel procedure. A chemical peel is not recommended for everyone who suffers from acne. It can be quite harmful for – pregnant women, people suffering from severe acne or people going through a serious acne outbreak. These chemical peels may also have some side-effects, one of the most serious one being hypopigmentation & hyperpigmentation, which is a change in the color of the skin. A person may notice increased color in the new skin, which means that the new skin is darker that the rest of the untreated skin. This occurrence is known as hyperpigmentation. On the other hand, a person may also notice a depletion of color in the fresh skin, which means that the new skin is lighter than the older one. This is known as hypopigmentation and it is often a temporary condition. Some of the other side effects that could be caused after a chemical peel procedure are:

  • Redness: Based on how strong the solutions used in the chemical peel are, various degrees of redness could occur. The strength of the solution also determines how long the redness lasts. Mild peels normally cause no redness, while medium peels result in considerable redness that may last for a few weeks. Strong peels lead to prominent redness that could last for up to three or four months.

  • Irritation & crusting: During the chemical peel procedure, a person may develop cuts or scabs, in reaction to the solution used. Stronger peels usually lead to crusting, as the old layer of the skin exfoliates and the new layer emerges. This irritation or crusting can be treated, after consultation with a dermatologist.

  • Peeling & flaking: These are comparatively minor side-effects, which are normally temporary, as long as the person does not pull off the skin or pick at the flakes, as that could result in serious scarring and infections. There are a few lotions and ointments available that could help the skin heal faster.

  • A burning & stinging sensation: Even the lightest peel can cause temporary stinging & burning.
