Chalazion Treatment – Causes, Symptoms And Natural Remedies

What Is Eye Chalazion

A chalazion refers to a fluid-filled swelling or cyst that occurs on the upper or lower eyelid. It results from a blockage of the sebaceous glands of the eyelid. This blockage is mainly due to accumulation of oil secretions and rarely involves bacteria. However, the bacteria in surrounding areas may cause infection. They usually do not cause any pain, but may lead to tenderness and swelling. The nodule gradually grows over a period of time and may become red, painful or warm. The sebaceous glands secrete sebum or oil and when they become clogged, they may rupture and result in inflammation. Small chalazions that do not produce any symptoms may subside and disappear on their own. If a chalazion grows larger and presses on the cornea, problems in vision could occur. Chalazions are similar to styes. However, a stye results from blockage of the gland and hair follicles that are much nearer to the surface of the skin on the eyelid. Styes and chalazions generally do not occur at the same time. In case of chalazions that do not respond to treatment; especially those that are too large in size and those that are recurrent, surgical removal may be the only option available.

Causes Of Chalazions

There are various factors that lead to the occurrence of chalazions. Sometimes swelling may occur around the eye due to a secondary infection. This may lead to the development of chalazions at the edge of the eyelids. High blood lipid concentrations, immunodeficiency, chronic blepharitis and inflammation of the meibomian glands are some of the other causes of chalazions. The symptoms of chalazion usually include swelling, tenderness, soreness, pain, redness, blurred vision, excessive tearing and discomfort while blinking.

Treatments For Chalazion

With proper care taken, a chalazion should disappear in a couple of months. Chalazions could be treated at home using warm compresses. This must be done repeatedly at regular intervals. You may soak a clean washcloth in hot water and then place against the affected eyelid for 5 to 10 minutes. It is important not to rub or scratch the affected eyelid as it could cause aggravation of the condition. One should also wash the hand properly and refrain from touching the eye too much as germs may get transferred to the cyst. Washing the eyes with cool rosewater is also known to help in easing the symptoms of a chalazion. A compress of warm guava leaves is another home remedy that is known to work well in treating chalazions.
