Causes Of Excess Saliva In Mouth
An increase in the amount of saliva in the mouth is generally a temporary condition and not a reason to worry. The salivary glands normally produce up to two quarts of saliva on a daily basis. Since we swallow continuously and are usually not conscious of this, we are unable to notice the presence of the saliva in the mouth. In case there is a sudden increase in the amount of saliva in the mouth, it could indicate that the salivary glands are producing more saliva than normal. It could also mean that the individual is swallowing less than he usually does.
Excess saliva in the mouth is a symptom of another underlying condition, and not a disease in itself. The condition could be one that has been present since childhood or one that could occur later on in life. One of the primary causes of excess saliva in the mouth is hyperactivity of the salivary glands. This could occur due to a tumor or parotid swelling. If the rate of swallowing is lower than normal, there could be an accumulation of excess saliva in the mouth. Individuals with conditions such as swollen tonsils, facial paralysis, swollen palate and Bell’s palsy may have trouble swallowing regularly. This is also the reason why drooling occurs in some of these individuals. Certain medications can also lead to an increase in saliva production. Medications used in the treatment of schizophrenia and some cholinergic drugs stimulate the salivary glands into producing more saliva. Pregnant women may also complain of excess saliva in the mouth during the early days of pregnancy. This can be attributed to fluctuations of hormonal levels. Other causes of excess saliva could be dentures or dental restorations.
The treatment for excess saliva in the mouth depends upon the cause of the underlying problem and how severe it is. If the cause is the intake of medications, then it is advisable to consult your doctor about discontinuing the drugs temporarily. The dosage may also be reduced or you could switch to another medication depending on what your doctor tells you. Excess saliva in the mouth during pregnancy usually subsides after the first trimester. Gargling with a solution of vinegar and water is known to be helpful in reducing the amount of saliva in the mouth. One can also such on small piece of lemon as this helps to control the quantity of saliva in the mouth.
