The sebaceous glands that lie beneath the outer layer of the skin secrete an oily substance called sebum, which is responsible for keeping the skin naturally moisturized. During adolescence, the sudden increase in the level of hormones in the body causes these glands to produce excessive sebum, which gets accumulated in the pores on the skin and traps dust particles, leading to red eruptions on the skin called acne.
