Belching (Burping) - Causes And Remedies

Belching or burping, technically also known as eructation, is the release of gas formed in the stomach through the mouth. It is typically characterized by an unpleasant sound and odor when the gas is released. This happens when there is a build-up of excess gas in the digestive tract and the body needs to release some of it in order to relieve the pressure within the stomach. The main cause behind belching is the entry of too much air through the mouth into the digestive tract during eating. Eating hurriedly, speaking or laughing during meals, and drinking carbonated beverages can cause a person to swallow too much air during ingestion, and thereby cause belching. Certain digestive disorders that cause lack of stomach acids may also sometimes cause belching.

Home Remedies For Belching


You may also find a few home remedies very helpful in addressing this condition.

  • Crush a few fresh mint leaves and add the paste to a glass of water. Drink this after every meal for at least 2 weeks. This helps in the easy digestion of food and prevents belching.

  • If you want instant relief from excessive bloating or continuous belching, add a pinch of baking soda into a glass of water and drink it.

  • For another remedy, soak a piece of garlic in water for some time and swallow it along with the water.

  • You could also add a couple of bay leaves and the peel of an orange into a pot of water and boil this for 5 minutes. After the solution cools, strain away the clear water and drink small sips of it periodically.

  • Another popular remedy is to consume fennel seeds roasted or steeped and consumed as a tonic. Consuming these seeds after a heavy meal aids digestion and prevents belching.

  • Alternatively, you could also chew a few fresh betel leaves mixed with a little honey after having a meal.

  • In addition, add a pinch of turmeric powder and half a teaspoon of rock salt in a glass of hot water and drink it while it is still warm to get instant relief from bloating of the stomach and belching.


There are a few easy ways in which you could tackle this problem. Never eat in a hurry or talk while you are eating. Avoid having carbonated drinks during or just after a meal. Cut down on your intake of chocolate, onion and alcohol, as these induce gas formation and lead to belching. Lentils and beans, cabbage, bananas, sprouts and dairy products can also cause belching, so minimize their intake.
