Hyperacidity - Causes, Symptoms, Remedies

Hyperacidity is a condition in which the stomach produces excessive amount of hydrochloric acid. The most common symptom of hyperacidity is heartburn, which occurs when the excess acid rises up into the esophagus and causes a burning sensation in the chest. Other symptoms include belching, a sour taste in the mouth, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Drinking too much alcohol or carbonated drinks, smoking, eating too much fried or spicy food, not maintaining fixed timings for meals, inadequate and erratic sleep, stress and anxiety can cause hyperacidity. Drinking plenty of water is one of the most effective ways of countering acidity. You must also avoid eating in a hurry and chew your food properly in order to prevent hyperacidity.

Home Remedies For Acidity Cure


A few home remedies may be followed to treat hyperacidity.

  • A mixture of carrot and cabbage juice is highly effective in treating hyperacidity. Slice a big carrot into thin pieces and finely chop a quarter of a big cabbage finely. Now boil these together in a liter of water and strain away the clear liquid. Once it cools down, store this solution in the refrigerator and drink it half an hour before every meal. Follow this process daily for a few days.

  • In case of severe acidity, you may consume a teaspoon of olive oil 30 minutes before a meal.

  • Chewing peppermint is also another remedy for hyperacidity, as it relives abdominal pain, facilitates digestion and neutralizes the effects of excess acid in the stomach. You may also use peppermint as a condiment to flavor your food.

  • Eating ripe bananas, mangoes, muskmelons and dates is also recommended to patients of acidity.

  • In case of heartburn caused by acidity, consuming a glass of chilled milk can be a quick and effective remedy.

  • Chewing a few basil leaves with a small portion of jaggery also relieves heartburn.

  • Alternatively, you may also eat a mixture of ginger root and honey or chew a few almonds after every meal to remedy hyperacidity.

  • For another remedy, drink a glass of pineapple juice after every meal.

  • Drinking sweet lemon juice before a meal also prevents the formation of excessive acid.

  • A very popular remedy is to add a pinch of powdered pepper into a glass of diluted buttermilk and drink this at regular intervals throughout the day.

  • You may also boil a teaspoon of cumin powder in a liter of water and drink small portions of this solution regularly after it cools down.
